We analyzed the nutritional labels of eight different Halloween Candy Fun Packs (Snickers, 3 Musketeers, Crunch, Butterfingers, Baby Ruth, Reese’s, Hershey’s Milk Chocolate, and Twizzler’s) for:

  • ·      Serving Size
  • ·      Servings per bag
  • ·      Grams per serving
  • ·      Calories per serving
  • ·      Calories from Fat per serving

<!--[if !supportLists]-->

The children recorded the data on the attached pdf and then derived:

  • ·      Calories Per Piece by dividing Calories per serving by Serving Size.
  • ·      Number of Pieces Per Bag by multiplying the serving size by Servings per bag.
  • ·      Grams per bag by multiplying grams per Serving by Servings per bag.
  • ·      Calories per bag by multiplying Calories per serving by Servings per bag.
  • ·      Total several columns by adding vertically with carrying.
  • ·      Average several columns by adding all 8 values vertically and then dividing the total by 8

<!--[if !supportLists]-->

 The objective was to get them to learn how to record relevant data. Second, they should learn how to solve real-life problems and understand when +-*/ needs to be used. Third, we continue to reinforce adding vertically and dividing using the short division method. Fourth, the bonus is if they want to continue our discussion of the standard algorithm for multiplication, the last two columns will give them that challenge (this is only for the advanced student).
