Isometric Drawings and Cube Building from Top, Front and Side Views

The children were somewhat obsessed with creating cubes. One of the most satisfying activities after you create structures out of cubes is drawing them on isometric paper. Isometric drawings are 3D drawings used by architects and engineers. They show three sides, all in dimensional proportion, but none are shown as a true shape with 90 degree corners. All the vertical lines are drawn vertically but all horizontal lines are drawn at 30 degrees to the base line. Isometric is an easy method of drawing 3D images.

I created 11 isometric drawings for the children to emulate on isometric paper during the week. During class, they created actual cube structures from Top, Front and Side View drawings on a 4 x 4 grid. I provided the children with additional isometric paper should they create their own cube structure and they want to draw them in 3D.
