INTERNET ACTIVITY EVERY MINUTE: Multiples, x60, x24, x7, x52

I challenged the K-1st graders to calculate the occurance of each of these Internet activities in 2 minutes, 3 minutes and 4 minutes. The attached pdf has examples of adding vertically with carries. Please have them practice as much as possible. One strategy we discussed for multiplying by four is to double a number by adding the number to itself and then double that sum.
I challenged the 3-5th graders to calculate each of these Internet activities in one hour (x60), one day (x24), and one week (x7). For the x60 calculation, we used a few processes but the easiest was for them to double the number first and then triple that sum to reach x6; then tac on a zero to multiply that product by 10.
Multiplication of the per hour number by 24 is even easier since we just tac on a zero first to multiply by 10 and double that number (x20); then double the original per hour number and double that product again to reach (x4). Finally, add the x20 and x4 number to reach x24. This is essentially the distributive property (x (20+4)).
Multiplication of the per day number by 7 is easy if you first multiply by 5 (tac on a zero and take half of that number) and add that to the number’s double.
Finally, I challenged the 6-7th graders to calculate each of these Internet activities in one year. First multiply 60x24x365=525,600 and then multiply this number by the per minute number. We used standard algorithm for multiplication but emphasized casting away zeros and bringing them back at the end.
