Digital Roots for Top 10 Sports Salaries (K and 1st Grade)

The digital root of a number is the number obtained by adding all the digits of that number. If that sum is a two digit number, then add the digits of that number, and continue until a single-digit number is reached.

For example, the digital root of 20,007 is 9 because 2+0+0+0+7=9.

The digital root of 65,536 is 7, because 6 + 5 + 5 + 3 + 6 = 25 and 2 + 5 = 7.

The attached pdf shows the top 10 paid athletes in the National Football League, National Hockey League, Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, National Basketball Association, and NASCAR and their yearly salaries.

OBJECTIVE: The children should find the digital root of each salary amount. If the first sum is a two digit number, they should show that number and then add those digits to find the root.

Beware of numbers like 1,000,900 since the digits first add up to 10. Since this is a two digit number, you have to add 1 + 0 together to get a digital root of 1.
