The objective of this week’s lesson was to demonstrate how numbers can be factored several ways.  For instance, the number 12 has factor pairs of 2 and 6, 6 and 2, 3 and 4, 4 and 3, 1 and 12, and 12 and 1. I intentionally did not discuss the fact that these are factors; we simply had the students make rectangles out of groups of candy.  When they were able to create a rectangle, I had them record the dimensions like 2 by 6 and draw a dot configuration of 2x6 and then draw a rectangle around the perimeter. I had them record the dimensions for each rectangle possible for each number.

Essentially, they were multiplying by counting by the values they learned to step off last week (by 2s, by 3s, by 4s, by 5s, etc.)

The attached pdf has an example for 12, the instructions, and another pdf has the solutions for the nine rectangles of 36.

During class, the children factored the numbers 18, 21, 24, 27, 36, 42, and 45 using the eight groups of candy. The number 36 has the most factors.

MATHLETE HOMEWORK FOR WEEK

<!--[if !supportLists]-->1)           <!--[endif]-->TAKE YOUR HALLOWEEN CANDY, LEGOS, PENNIES, TENNIS BALLS, OR ANYTHING OF WHICH YOU HAVE MANY.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->2)           <!--[endif]-->GROUP THEM TOGETHER.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->3)           <!--[endif]-->COUNT HOW MANY ARE IN A GROUP.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->4)           <!--[endif]-->ORGANIZE THEM IN RECTANGLES.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->5)           <!--[endif]-->HOW MANY DIFFERENT DIMENSIONS OF RECTANGLES CAN YOU FIND FOR THE GIVEN AMOUNT (in our example of 12 Oreo Cookies, we found six different rectangles of dimension: 2x6, 6x2, 3x4, 4x3, 1x12, 12x1).

<!--[if !supportLists]-->6)           <!--[endif]-->CRAZY NUMBER 36 HAS 9 DIFFERENT RECTANGLES.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->7)           <!--[endif]-->WRITE DOWN THE TYPES OF [CANDY] AND AMOUNT AND THEN DRAW THE RECTANGLES WITH DOTS FOR EACH.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->8)           <!--[endif]-->DRAW A RECTANGLE PERIMETER AROUND EACH RECTANGLE OF DOTS.
