K/1st Grade Writing Numbers

Developmentally, kids will write many numbers in mirro image until they are 7 or 8 years old and there is nothing wrong with that. However, one of the wonders of mathematics is being able to see patterns and to follow sequences. Training them to follow the correct form of numbers can help to teach them to recognize patterns.

I have them write the numbers the way they want to and then I write 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 below their numbers and ask them to try to follow my numbers below. I also dot the numbers so they can feel the rhythm of drawing numbers. This may take months or longer but when they finally start to see the numbers properly, they will never look back.

I have them write their numbers with a dry erase marker, and when backwards, I turn the paper around to reveal the correct form.

Have them practice by looking at the attached pdf and following the dotted lines. Only praise them for doing it correctly; if they do it backwards, just keep doing it next to their number correctly until they begin reversing the numbers.

Use their new discovery of palindromes to give them numbers to practice.

Identify the numbers that are most troubling to your child like 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9 and have them write those numbers, color those numbers, use their finger to trace the numbers on a foggy mirror or window, use a dusty surface to create the numbers. The opportunities are endless.

As for the number 1, please have them practice by just writing a vertical line with no special top or bottom. The number 8 should be the most fun as it is the symbol for infinity when turned on its side. Tracing the number 8 is truly an endless pursuit.

Please have them bring me any of their work they created.
